The Bonham Volunteer Fire Department was founded in the late 1880's and was an all
volunteer department until 1893 when a paid Fire Chief and four paid firemen were put
into place. The founding members were: Joe P. Noble, Sim Kennedy, J.C. Saunders,
R.G. Alexander, Hugh Halsell, Thomas R. Hackley, H.S. Shortridge, Wilbur Hightower,
and Paul Clendenen. The original fire station was built in 1885 and was located on the
northeast corner of the downtown square. Records show that in 1917, there were 38
volunteer firemen and 4 paid firemen.

The Bonham Volunteer Fire Department accepts applications from anyone interested
in becoming a volunteer fireman. Applicants must pass a physical, background check,
